Warriors, Aztecs searching for answers

October 6, 2012
The Maui News

San Diego State football coach Rocky Long described his team as "frustrated" this week in quotes posted on the school's athletics website, and said he guessed the team the Aztecs will host today, the University of Hawaii, "feels exactly the same way we do."

Judging by comments from Warriors coach Norm Chow, Long is exactly right.

"Obviously we are very disappointed in what went on over the weekend. We're all embarrassed," Chow said Monday in a news conference on, after a 47-0 loss to Brigham Young on Sept. 28.

Norm Chow is seeking his first win at Hawaii over a Bowl Subdivision team.

Hawaii (1-3, 0-1 Mountain West Conference) is winless against Bowl Subdivision teams this season, outscored 165-34 in those games.

The Aztecs (2-3, 1-1) have a potent offense and are averaging 35.4 points per game, though they are also surrendering 31.8.

Hawaii will try to slow down San Diego State while dealing with injuries, especially on the defensive line - Geordon Hanohano and Siasau Matagiese were both carted off the field during the game against the Cougars, and Chow said Marcus Malepeai "will probably miss a couple weeks because of his knee."

That could mean more time for Jordan Pu'u-Robinson, a former Baldwin High School and Kamehameha Maui standout who transferred from Washington State after last season. He made his season debut against BYU, after the NCAA granted an exemption from the rule that transfers must sit out a season, and had one tackle.

"Thank goodness we got Jordan Robinson back," Chow said. "He played awfully well for his limited amount of reps. One day he was a service-team tight end, the next time he's playing snaps at defensive tackle and doing a very nice job for us."

San Diego State offensive lineman Alec Johnson said he isn't anticipating an easier time because of the absences on the UH defense.

"They're going to have good backups that we're expecting," Johnson said.

The Aztecs have given up at least 38 points in each of their last three games - the last two of which were losses, including a 52-40 defeat at Fresno State on Sept. 29.

"We have a lot of young guys and a lot of us are making mental errors," said senior defensive back Leon McFadden, who has intercepted three passes this season, returning two for touchdowns. "We need to improve on those things."

The Warriors and Aztecs, former Western Athletic Conference opponents, have not played since 2005. San Diego State leads the all-time series 15-9-2 - going 7-3 at home, with wins in the last five meetings in San Diego. Hawaii's last win at Qualcomm Stadium was over Illinois in the 1992 Holiday Bowl.
