The National Weather Service has issued a high-surf advisory for the north-facing shores of Maui and the north- and west-facing shores of Molokai through 5 p.m. Wednesday.
A long-period northwest swell is expected to build today, with surf reaching advisory levels along exposed north- and west-facing shores by this afternoon, according to the advisory. The swell is expected increase further Tuesday, with wave heights potentially reaching warning levels.
Surf is expected to reach 12 to 18 feet on north-facing shores and 8 to 14 feet on west-facing shores, the National Weather Service reported. Surf heights are estimates of the face, or front, of waves.
People are urged to stay out of the water and away from the shore break, due to hazardous wave action and strong rip currents.
