High-surf advisory for Maui, Molokai
The National Weather Service has issued a high-surf advisory for the north-facing shores of Maui and the north- and west-facing shores of Molokai through 6 p.m. Wednesday.
A long-period northwest swell is expected to build today, with surf reaching advisory levels along exposed north- and west-facing shores by this afternoon, according to the advisory. The swell is expected to increase further Tuesday, with wave heights potentially reaching warning levels.
Surf is expected to reach 12 to 18 feet on north-facing shores and 8 to 14 feet on west-facing shores, the National Weather Service reported. Surf heights are estimates of the faces, or fronts, of waves.
People are urged to stay out of the water and away from the shore break, due to hazardous wave action and rip currents.

County honored for budget presentation
The U.S. and Canadian Government Finance Officers Association awarded Maui County its Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the 2012 fiscal year budget.
"The award represents a significant achievement for Maui County," according to a news release. "It reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting."
In order to receive the award, the county had to satisfy numerous guidelines and benchmarks for its budget presentation that overall assess the budget as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide and communication device.
Mayor Alan Arakawa and Budget Director Sandy Baz received the award from the nonprofit professional association, which has about 17,500 members.
