Highest income earners are not paying fair share

October 8, 2012
The Maui News

I'm a 47 percenter. I retired early at age 62, paying a penalty for doing so. Part-time jobs helped fill the gap.

Now Mitt Romney and his congressional allies are telling me that I don't deserve my retirement, that Social Security is broken, that benefits must be cut, that the system must be converted to privately driven financing.

Not so, say more than a few experts. All that's really required is for everybody who participates to pay their fair share. Presently, the highest income earners don't.

Here's the thing: I paid taxes to finance the system. I still pay taxes. But now Mitt Romney and his congressional sidekicks tell me that I'm not entitled and must bear more of the burden.

I'm 73 years old. My tax rate is 25 percent. Romney's is 15 percent.
