The Maui News

Police arrested a 30-year-old Kula man suspected of being involved in a robbery attempt last week at a Kula residence where medical marijuana was being grown.

Bail was initially set at $100,000 for Justin Pahia, following his arrest Sunday.

During his initial appearance Tuesday in Wailuku District Court, Judge Kelsey Kawano increased Pahia's bail to $250,000, following the recommendation of the prosecutor's office.

A preliminary hearing is set Thursday afternoon for Pahia, who is charged with two counts of first-degree robbery and keeping a firearm in an improper place.

Deputy Prosecutor John Tam said Pahia is a danger to the community, noting that a shotgun was fired during the robbery.

Police are looking for a second suspect in the robbery, reported at 2:15 p.m. Oct. 1 in the backyard of a home on Alae Road.

A 58-year-old man living at the home reported that two males with a large blue pit bull jumped over a fence to enter the yard, where the resident confronted the intruders and told them to leave.

Police said one man struck the resident with a small pistol airsoft gun, causing the victim to lose his balance and knocking out an upper tooth.

The second robber pulled the trigger of a shotgun, discharging a round that went into the dirt to the right of the victim, police said. The robbers fled after the victim began calling for help and neighbors who heard the shot yelled that they were calling police.

Police officers located Pahia at 5:50 p.m. Sunday at his residence on Pueo Drive in Kula, said Lt. Jayson Rego of the Criminal Investigation Division.

He said that, in addition to arresting Pahia, officers arrested his 57-year-old father for investigation of first-degree hindering prosecution. Officers had told the father to notify police if Pahia returned home because he was being sought in the investigation, Rego said.

Pahia's father was released pending further investigation.

The second robbery suspect, who was carrying the shotgun, is described as 5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing 170 pounds, with numerous tattoos.
