Feeling the teeth at Jaws

October 11, 2012
The Maui News
In Peahi, the waves at the Jaws surfing spot clench down on big-wave surfer Isaac Stant on Wednesday morning. Surfers reported waves in the 30-40 foot range Wednesday. Stant, 22, of Pukalani was among a handful of expert surfers who tackled the waves Wednesday in windy conditions. “I was taking off, and the wind just caught me,” Stant said. “I went all sidewards and got so pounded.” The National Weather Service said Wednesday afternoon that the high-surf warnings along north and west-facing shores had been downgraded to advisories lasting through this morning. The northwest swell was still expected today to produce combined seas of 10 feet or higher.
