A vote for longer terms is a vote to destroy Maui

October 11, 2012
The Maui News

I just read the "Know How to Vote on the Proposed Amendments to our Maui County Charter" notice mailed out.

I was shocked and amazed to see what I'm calling "the good old boy amendment" that will allow the same crooked politicians to stay in office for four years instead of the traditional two.

How many times have we said no to the illegal mall? No to Honua'ula/Wailea 670?

Where is the Kihei high school?

How can a subdivision get water meters Upcountry when locals Upcountry for decades haven't been allowed to?

How is it that there's a 20-year waiting list for a slip at any of our harbors on an island whose culture and history was the open sea?

And yet, we keep re-electing them or their carbon copies.

If you vote yes to extending the County Council's terms of office, you are voting to confirm the destruction of Maui. This means open season on (for those who can afford it) what's left of our beautiful island and our many ways of life. It means the death of our water, air, land, fish and sea.

Look for it carefully on your ballot. Vote no to the change of Section 3-2.5 and Article 15.

Robin Williams got it right when he said, "Politicians and babies should be changed often and for the same reasons."
