I'm so tired of hearing complaints about our burning cane.
I'll be 52 years old, have lived in Hawaii all my life, grew up with burning cane and so did my four children, husband and our kupuna who are still living here today, just like aunty who just turned 107 years old (God bless her). I bet her respiratory system is just perfect, and doesn't she live in the central area?
I've never needed to take my children, myself or husband to the emergency room due to cane burning. The reason for respiratory cases is due to the fact of those jets that fly over our islands weekly letting out all those dirty chemicals that gets into our bodies.
Like Dr. Bill Mitchell states in the Oct. 4 article, he sees "an even stronger relationship (of respiratory cases) with vog" and also states that's it is Mother Nature. So is burning cane - that's our nature.
So, if burning cane bothers you to the point of always complaining then you need to make a choice - leave our beautiful Maui and go back where you came from or live with it like we kanaka maoli have for centuries. Maui is beautiful and green and that's how we want it.
Don't let outsiders come onto our island and make changes. Take away our Maui cane and you'll get New York.
