Before announcing my candidacy nearly a year ago, I pledged to conduct a fair, honest and positive campaign. I continue to keep this pledge as we approach the general election.
As a role model for my children, it is better never to attain elected office than to compromise the morals I am trying to instill. For the people of Maui County, I hope my commitment to running a clean campaign will be an indication that I am the kind of person who will maintain ethical behavior, regardless of the outcome.
As the general election draws near, my opponent has resorted to mudslinging. Alan Fukuyama's campaign has made baseless accusations and claims by way of a core campaign member in an Oct. 7 letter to the editor. The allegations are completely false.
I will continue to focus my campaign on the issues we are facing and the solutions that can be found by working together.
If elected, it will be a result of years preparing myself in community service, the effort I put forth on the campaign trail and the hard work and generosity of my supporters. As a county, we are facing the tremendous tasks of bettering our economy, safeguarding our precious resources, supporting our families and creating opportunity for our children. Positive leadership is needed now more than ever.
I sincerely hope that together we can create a positive change in Maui County and that you will cast your ballot as an informed voter on Nov. 6.
