Story shows newspaper is playing along with GOP

October 15, 2012
The Maui News

I am outraged by how The Maui News handled the Oct. 5 story regarding Republican Party complaints about Kaniela Ing's campaign paperwork. This story gives a ridiculous amount of attention to what is little more than a rehash of claims previously made by the Republicans about insignificant bureaucratic technicalities.

The tone of the headline and amount of space devoted by the paper might be appropriate if, for example, there had been an official, unbiased and thorough investigation by the State of Hawaii resulting in a formal complaint. But nothing even remotely like this has occurred.

Unfortunately, it seems that all a political opponent has to do is write a letter and it turns into a sensational and misleading front-page headline.

Republicans have declared that they will not let facts get in the way of their campaigning and The Maui News is playing right along.

I have to say, it's ironic that Ing is the only candidate in this race who has pledged to abide by campaign spending limits and not run a negative campaign.
