A selection of original watercolors and limited edition giclees by Maui artist Willow Norris are on display this month at Maui Hands Gallery in Lahaina. Meet the artist from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the gallery, located at 612 Front Street.
Willow's paintings reflect an inner peace, taking the observer on a journey of enchantment, capturing the love and enjoyment of life. Her subject matter swings from whimsical to spiritual, not focusing on any central theme.
The artist, typically, first renders a detailed drawing on high quality archival watercolor paper. She then applies a variety of water soluble lightfast pigments with sable hair watercolor brushes and it is this slow build-up of up to 20 washes the allows her to achieve the bold richness of color evident in her pieces. Drawing from her past experience with aquatinting, scraping and burnishing, and incorporating the use of fine pigmented wax, her work is truly mixed media.
