Baldwin tops MIL for sixth straight year

The Baldwin High School boys bowling team clinched a sixth consecutive Maui Interscholastic League championship by beating

St. Anthony 3-0 at Maui Bowling Center in Wailuku during Saturday's final matches of the regular season.

The Baldwin girls, who had already secured a fourth straight MIL title, finished off their third unbeaten season in a row.

Yamasaki

MIL medalist Tyler Yamasaki had a 210 for the Baldwin boys (21-3), Travis Andrade added a 190 and Reece Yokote had a 160.

"We knew what was happening going in. We all talked about it," said Yamasaki, who finished the MIL season with a 162.52 average. "You just try to bowl your own game, though."

The Trojans (15-9) needed to sweep the matches with the Bears to force a playoff.

Christian Altura-Taal had a 146 for St. Anthony, Chaz Fernandez had a 138 and Michael Fernandez had a 135.

The Baldwin girls (24-0) got a 178 from Sarah Abe, a 177 from Janiesse Palafox and a 167 from Brooke Higa, the season medalist.

Higa, who placed third in last year's state tournament, had a 155.96 average in league matches this year, leading the Bears' sweep of the medal honors - Palafox had a 145.88, and Chelsea Kadokawa a 145.36.

Sloan Becraft had a 115 for the St. Anthony girls (14-10) on Saturday, while Estelle Rossman and Rachel Lallo each had 110 games.

Trent Hori of Maui High had the second-best boys average of the year, a 160.00. King Kekaulike's Jeremy Chang was third with a 157.96, helped by a 229 in Saturday's 3-0 loss to Lahainaluna. Hori and Chang qualified as individuals for the state tournament, scheduled for Nov. 1-2 at Kauai Bowl in Lihue.

Tyler Ihu had a 156 on Saturday for the Lunas (7-17), Royce Rosenthal had a 154 and Jake Ryan a 131. Na Alii finished 0-24.

The Lahainaluna girls defeated King Kekaulike 3-0 to finish 11-13. Terra Miller and Marla Ito each had games of 124 for the Lunas, and Brittany Treu had a 105. Keannenue Mahi had a 118 for Na Alii (3-21).

Becraft earned an individual qualifying spots for the state tournament, as did Abe, in addition to the Baldwin team.
