Preying on sea turtle, paddle board

October 24, 2012
The Maui News

Witnesses on Monday observed a sea turtle being chased and attacked by a shark at about 3:30 p.m. Monday afternoon at Kanaha Beach Park. The turtle sustained lacerations to its right front fin, county officials said. The sea turtle survived the attack and was transported to a Department of Land and Natural Resources facility, a county news release said. The attack closed Kanaha Beach Park and surrounding areas until 5:30 p.m. Monday. Pictures taken by witnesses show the shark to be about 10 to 12 feet long, based on the size of its fin. This was the second time in a week that Kanaha Beach and surrounding areas were closed because of a shark sighting. On Thursday, a 6- to 8-foot shark bit a stand-up paddle board in the area. The paddle boarder was not injured.
