King Kekaulike High School graduate Sam Cyr was tied for eighth after Thursday's first round of a PGA Tour Qualifying Tourna-ment first-stage event, carding a 3-under-par 69 at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif.
Cyr, 26, had an eagle, three birdies and two bogeys, and was three shots behind the leader, Byron Smith of Palm Desert, Calif.
Approximately 450 players will advance altogether from 14 first-stage qualifiers. The second-stage events are scheduled for next month, and the final qualifying stage for Nov. 28-Dec. 3 at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif. The top 25 players and ties in the final stage will be eligible for PGA Tour membership in 2013. The next 25 and ties will be eligible for membership on the Web.com Tour.

Cyr, who has earned $39,473 in 11 events on the Asian Tour this year and tied for ninth at the Mercuries Taiwan Masters in September, is making his fourth PGA Tour Q-School appearance. He reached the second stage in 2009 and 2010.
