The recent candidate forum was truly something to see (The Maui News, Oct. 11). Kaniela Ing completely dominated Rep. George Fontaine. When the two South Maui candidates were asked how to take care of the problem of our state's unfunded liability, Fontaine claimed that he would take a cut-only approach without raising taxes or touching social safety net programs.
Ing correctly pointed out that this is mathematically impossible and furthermore pointed to an online survey where Fontaine publicly stated the opposite budget approach - maintain all funding across the board, increase law enforcement and greatly decrease all social safety net programs.
We need honesty, not a politician who will say one thing while speaking in front of Tea Party Maui then say the exact opposite a year later during campaign season.
Ing is a fiscally conservative Democrat and a critical thinker who will take a balanced approach to our problems. More importantly, he has been honest from the minute he has started. Let's end the political games and support Ing on Nov. 6.
