An Oct. 17 letter writer made various claims of how we would benefit from a Mitt Romney presidency. I wish to state, right off the bat, that 47 percent of Hawaii would be immediately disenfranchised by a Romney presidency.
Myself and a lot of others would like to see less defense spending because for every $1 billion spent on defense 12,000 jobs are created but, for that same amount spent in education, 27,000 jobs are created.
Hawaii needs to reduce our import of fossil fuels. Energy independence is good for Hawaii - the sun and geothermal and wind will produce the jobs of the future generations. Romney and his billionaire Big Oil campaign donors, with their drill and spill and pollute solutions, are destroying the health of the planet and lining the pockets of the polluters/donors.
Obamacare is already helping those with pre-existing conditions find health insurance and providing real health care instead of Romney's solution of emergency room care. Insurance providers and hospitals have agreed that $716 billion will be saved by Obamacare, not cut as the GOP misinformation spin perpetuates.
Since 2000 and the Bush tax cuts, the Republicans drove the U.S. economic bus into the ditch in 2008. They don't deserve getting the keys back.
Finally, Romney claims he saved the Salt Lake Olympics, yet U.S. taxpayers footed the bill, giving between $400 million to $1.5 billion for the event. We deserve the credit, not misinformation experts like Romney.
