100 Years Ago

1912 - Duke Kahanamoku has well repaid his friends on Maui by giving three good swimming exhibitions. All those who donated to the Duke Fund and many others who did not give anything, have had the opportunity to seeing the World Champion in action.

75 Years Ago

1937 - Maui's first complete apartment house with hotel service will open when John Duarte, proprietor of the Haleakala Hotel, opens his new 10-apartment, two-story building located in the rear of the hotel. Each apartment is fully furnished with a hot and cold shower, a private telephone, linen and maid service.

50 Years Ago

1962 - A torchlight parade just at twilight will herald the long-awaited island opening of Sheraton Maui. The parade will commence at the lower circle below Black Rock and proceed up the driveway to the lobby atop Kekaa, where the Hawaiian ceremonies will be held.

25 Years Ago

1987 - When Mary Molina was young, she remembers her mother making a fresh flower lei for her stepfather's hat each morning. He'd head off to his job cutting back the grass along West Maui roadsides, with his tattered lauhala hat on his head, and he was happy with the way he looked.

10 Years Ago

2002 - The state began charging beverage distributors a half-cent fee on glass and plastic beverage bottles under the first phase of Hawaii's "bottle bill." The deposit program would be fully implemented by Jan. 1, 2005.
