A 1998 Ford Explorer, driven by a 27-year-old Kahului man, left the roadway and struck King and a 19-year-old California woman as they were walking on the dirt shoulder of the road, police said. A third student walking with the two women wasn't injured, police said.

"The UH-Maui College community mourns the tragic loss of Devon King and extends our very deepest condolences to her family and friends," Chancellor Clyde Sakamoto said in a statement. "Devon was a priceless addition to our culinary program, loved by her classmates and so eager to venture into the culinary world. She will be missed.

"Our thoughts go out as well to the two students who were with her, especially the student who at this time is still being treated for her injuries. We wish her a speedy recovery and encourage all students to reach out to fellow students during this sad and difficult time and to take advantage of college counseling resources available."

Police said that the California woman was admitted to the hospital, with the extent of her injuries unknown.

Police said the women, who were staying in Kahului, were walking from a store. While the driver was at the scene, police said a passenger in his vehicle wasn't at the scene when officers arrived.

On Monday, yellow roses had been placed on a tree stump at the site of the collision on a lot near Kahului Public Library and Kulanaa'o apartments.

According to her Facebook page, King started in the UH-MC culinary program in August.

The traffic death was the 20th this year, compared with 16 at the same time last year.
