October 31, 2012
The Maui News

First photo: Parishioners line up for a chance to venerate the relic of St. Marianne Cope on Tuesday at St. Theresa Church in Kihei.

Second photo: The relic began a five-day tour of Maui County parishes at St. Theresa. The tour will culminate with a procession down the pali trail to Kalaupapa on Molokai. Beginning in 1888, Mother Marianne took over the work of caring for leprosy patients after St. Damien died after her arrival there. She cared for Kalaupapa residents for 30 years and was among seven canonized as saints in Rome on Oct. 21.

Third photo: The Rev. Gary Colton describes the scene during the canonization ceremonies in Rome. A parishioner reaches out to touch the relic's container.
