Slaying suspect has public defender
WAILUKU - A California man charged with killing his girlfriend is now being represented by the public defender's office, after it was determined that he qualifies for services, Deputy Public Defender Adriel Menor said Tuesday.
Court proceedings have been suspended for Gerald Galaway Jr., 39, of Santa Cruz while he is evaluated for mental fitness by three court-appointed psychiatrists or psychologists.
Galaway is asking to withdraw his no-contest pleas to a reduced charge of manslaughter and kidnapping in the Sept. 1, 2011, killing of Celestial Dove Cassman.
The 35-year-old Santa Cruz attorney had arrived on Maui with Galaway the day before her body was found under a tree off Kahekili Highway near Nakalele Point. An autopsy showed that she was strangled to death.
Last week, Wailuku attorney William Sloper, who had been retained to represent Galaway, was allowed to withdraw from the case.
