The Maui News

Hank Gaskell of Hana posted the second-best score in the round of 64 in the HIC Pro on Friday, and was one of three Maui surfers to advance in the Triple Crown qualifier at Sunset Beach on Oahu's North Shore.

Gaskell, who in July won the Quiksilver Cup in El Salvador, had a score of 15.94 on Friday - only the 17.83 by Australia's Thomas Woods was better.

Ian Gentil of Paia and Tanner Hendrickson of Haiku won their heats.

Granger Larsen of Napili is in one of two fourth-round heats yet to be completed. If he advances, he could be grouped with Gaskell in the round of 32.

Event organizers said they expect the remainder of the competition to be finished today.

Makana and Olamana Eleogram, bothers from Hana, were eliminated with third-place finishes in their round-of-64 heats.

Kevin Sullivan of Lahaina finished third in one of the round-of-96 heats completed Friday.
