There should be room for both costumes and floats

November 12, 2012
The Maui News

The big black cat (The Maui News, Nov. 2; Letters, Nov. 8) and the guy driving it was me.

I am an artist with disabilities and my electric wheelchair not only affords me mobility but a chance to express myself.

My sole intent is to put smiles on people's faces and promote the arts, and I know I succeeded in doing so for the vast majority of the evening's participants.

I made no attempt to enter the costume contest and I agree that what I created was a float and I think there should be room for that, too.

We have a vibrant keiki parade, why not follow that with a sanctioned parade of floats and a designated area where the floats could assemble and safely continue to be enjoyed by all?

A quick look on the Internet shows that big cat has become the mascot of this year's celebration. We all benefit, especially creativity, freedom of expression and the community at large.
