Sailing through practical lessons

November 14, 2012
The Maui News

Haleakala Waldorf School 7th-graders ply the nearshore waters of Lahaina on Tuesday afternoon during the second day of a weeklong junior sailing camp hosted by Lahaina Yacht Club. Combining lessons in subjects like physics, history and geography with practical skills such as knot tying, ocean safety and rigging and sailing a boat, the camp is part of a course titled "The Age of Exploration." Students also learned to bail. Seventh-grader Clair Peck (second photo) throws seawater out of a Sabot sailboat as classmate Yamuna Giubardo holds on to the side. The camp is taught by Curtis Robb, Mike Sowers and other LYC volunteers.
