Fire warning for islands' leeward areas
A red flag fire warning has been posted for today for leeward areas of all Hawaiian Islands.
A dry and stable air mass will bring low relative humidity, which when combined with strong and gusty trades create "fire weather conditions," the National Weather Service said.
The warning covers the coastal areas from Kaupo to the Kapalua areas and the central isthmus, according to National Weather Service maps.
Relative humidity is expected to be as low as 40 to 45 percent. Northeast winds are predicted to blow 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.
Similar conditions are possible Friday.
A red flag warning does not predict that there will be fires, the National Weather Service said.

Man held in assault; victim hospitalized
Police arrested a 37-year-old Lahaina man in the beating Monday afternoon of a co-worker who remained hospitalized Wednesday morning, police said.
The assault occurred at Napili Plaza after an argument between the two men turned into a physical fight, said acting Lt. Darrell Ramos of the Lahaina Criminal Investigation Division.
He said the victim, a 58-year-old Lahaina man, sustained serious head and facial injuries. He was unresponsive when he was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he remained in the intensive-care unit Wednesday morning, Ramos said.
He said both men worked for a maintenance company.
Ramos said charges are pending against the suspect, who was apprehended by patrol officers near his residence shortly after the assault.
