A 37-year-old Lahaina man is charged with second-degree murder in the beating death of a co-worker during a fight Monday at Napili Plaza, police said.
Bail was set at $100,000 for William Ranep, who was being held this morning at the Wailuku Police Station.
The victim was identified as 58-year-old Danny Jose of Lahaina.
After saying Wednesday morning that the victim remained hospitalized in the intensive-care unit at Maui Memorial Medical Center, acting Lt. Darrell Ramos of the Lahaina Criminal Investigation Division said this morning that Jose was pronounced dead Tuesday morning at the hospital.
Ramos said Jose sustained serious head and facial injuries after an argument between Jose and Ranep turned into a physical fight Monday afternoon at the shopping center. Both men worked for a maintenance company, Ramos said.
Jose was unresponsive when he was transported to the hospital, Ramos said.
Ranep was arrested near his residence shortly after the fight, Ramos said.
