Faulty main forces fixture

November 16, 2012
The Maui News
S F Masonry masons (clockwise from foreground) Wendell Kanoa, Chad Wahinehookae, Kanai Kanoa and Peter Akuna work on a newly poured section of sidewalk Tuesday afternoon oceanside of Honoapiilani Highway near the Lahaina Civic Center. County Department of Environmental Management Deputy Director Michael Miyamoto said the work is part of a $5 million project, which involved the replacement of a 20-inch force main that was put in in the 1970s. The main is about 6,000 feet long, and the old force main had two failures in the last five years. The Department of Environmental Management partnered with the parks department to install the pathway, which is about 4,000 feet long. It will allow people to walk from Wahikuli Wayside Park to Hanakaoo Beach Park. As part of the project, some picnic areas also were repaired. The work is expected to be done in February.
