The Maui News published Bill O'Reilly's latest boorish rant (Nov. 11) that President Barack Obama won the election because the takers voted for him.
If you examine the federal budget, you will see that Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security represent 48 percent of the total and defense plus interest on debt equals 31 percent. So, according to O'Reilly, seniors are the biggest takers and voter demographics show that they overwhelmingly supported Mitt Romney. That in itself is a mystery.
When you look at which states are the biggest takers from the federal government, you will find most of them in the South, which also voted overwhelmingly for Romney. If it weren't for the South, Democrats would have a huge majority in Congress.
I suspect that the real reason most of us are Democrats is a commitment to fairness in the social and economic systems. Fat cats like O'Reilly and the multimillionaire corporate executives who do not want to provide health care and are overpaid and undertaxed are the types of people who inspire us to vote.
