With sadness, I noted Chris Hart's passing (The Maui News, Nov. 13). He was a true inspiration.
I was afforded my first opportunity as professional planner with his hiring me to help with the South Maui open space and parks master plan for our regional park. He was committed to community-based planning and I was charged with conducting the community outreach. I was profoundly impressed by the experience, and I know the value of community-based plans in creating a sustainable attractive town.
I worked with him creating the Kihei 2000 community plan amendment that emphasized walking, biking and open space. His plan for our north-south collector corridor accommodated the rolling gulches of South Kihei.
He was a visionary. He was also my friend and mentor. I will always remember his gentle kindness and generous manner.
He will be missed and remembered. Aloha, Chris.
