Buzzer-beater lifts Illinois over Hawaii

DJ?Richardson hit a 3-pointer from the left baseline as time expired as Illinois beat Hawaii 78-77 in overtime at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.

Jace Tavita hit a free throw with 7 seconds remaining in overtime to put Hawaii up two.

Illinois quickly advanced the ball down the floor and Richardson wound up with the ball in the corner. He sank the shot, which was reviewed by the officials.

Hawaii's Vander Joaquim hit a field goal at the buzzer to send the game into the extra session tied at 66-66.

Joaquim had 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Brandon Spearman had 20 points and nine rebounds for UH (3-1).

The?Rainbow Warriors held a 51-31 rebounding edge.

Brandon Paul scored 25 points, Tracy Abrams added 22 points and five steals, and Richardson had 16 points for the Illini.

Illinois (3-0) will play Southern California in the first round of the EA?Sports Maui Invitational on Monday.
