Maui trio inducted into swimming Hall of Fame

Malcolm Cooper, Toyoko Takeyama and Spencer Shiraishi were inducted into the Hawaii Swimming Hall of Fame on Nov. 3 at the Hale Koa Hotel in Honolulu.

Cooper, who has coached at multiple levels, is an organizer for the Maui Age Group Swimming Association, and chairman of the board of directors for Hawaii Masters Swimming and Hawaii Age-Group Swimming.

Takeyama, who was part of Soichi Sakamoto's "Three-Year Club" that famously trained in Puunene's irrigation ditches, was a member of the Hawaii Swim Club team that took the women's 300-meter medley relay bronze medal at the U.S. outdoor championships in 1941.

Shiraishi, a coach for more than six decades, has helped guide myriad champions, most significantly with Maui Swim Club.
