Another shakeup

Roy Williams was clearly surprised - and not pleased - with Maryland going from the Atlantic Coast Conference to the Big Ten, a move announced Monday.

"I was shocked by it, there's no question," the North Carolina coach said. "I am an old ACC guy. I've been around a long time, probably longer than the league has. I didn't see it coming whatsoever."

Williams said the monetary fine previously proposed for such a move should have been a deterrent.

"I did remember after some meetings that we had that the fine was going to be $50 million," he said. "It will be interesting to see what happens on that. If they have got that extra money, maybe they can pass it around to some other people. It is strange to me, what's going on in college athletics. I mean, give me a break, the Big East goes all the way to fricking Hawaii, or close, anyway."

North Carolina and Maryland are among the charter members of the ACC, which was formed in 1953.

"I am one of those guys, if somebody doesn't think that my house is the right place to be, then go ahead and leave. I have got no problem with that," Williams said.

"I hate to see them go, but if they feel that is what's right for them, then see you."

Scouting scene

Nearly two dozen NBA personnel were in attendance during Monday's games.

High-profile scouts included the Los Angeles Lakers' Mitch Kupchak, Boston Celtics' Danny Ainge and Atlanta Hawks' Danny Ferry.

Tickets available

Tickets are still available for all remaining games, including stand-room-only for the championship game.

The ticket office at the Lahaina Civic Center is open from 8 a.m. until 30 minutes after the last game, and can also be reached at 667-3865.

Quotable

"I grabbed Coach after the game was over with and told him my first year at Kansas we lost eight games in a row, and things do turn around."
