A 33-year-old Kihei woman was arrested for assaulting her husband, who suffered a knife cut to his left elbow and a bite on his right back when an argument in their home turned physical Tuesday night, police said.

Leilani Rodrigues was charged with abuse and second-degree assault. She was being held in lieu of $2,000 bail Wednesday morning at the Wailuku Police Station.

Police were called at 11:05 p.m. after a heated argument between the couple turned physical when she began striking him in the head, police said. She grabbed a kitchen knife and began jabbing herself in the chest, police said.

He was able to take away the knife, police said, but she grabbed another knife.

When he again tried to take the knife from her, he was cut on the inside of his left elbow, police said. He did wrestle the knife away from her after she bit him on his back, police said.

Rodrigues fled from the Oe Street residence, but officers located her on the street, police said.

The 1-by-one-fourth-inch laceration on Rodrigues' 36-year-old husband's elbow was stitched by medics, who also treated the bite mark on his back, police said.

Medics also treated her for three one-fourth-inch puncture wounds on her right chest, police said.
