The Maui County Planning Department has issued a request for proposals for a new "small town planning" grant program.
The department is issuing grants for projects that will provide direct benefits to each of the 11 identified Maui communities - Haiku, Hana, Kaunakakai, Keokea-Waiakoa, Lahaina, Lanai City, Makawao, Paia, Waihee, Waikapu and Wailuku.
Projects must meet several criteria, such as being a direct benefit to the town and being manageable in term and scope.
A total of $243,000 was budgeted for the first-year program, so projects should be approximately $22,000 each. The department will be accepting and awarding proposals from December to June. The first round of approvals will be through December and every month after until each town has received one grant. Remaining funds will be awarded to any town.
The RFP and application forms are available on the Maui County website under "Hot Topics": www.mauicounty.gov/index.aspx?nid=121.
