1912 - Now that the road to Haleakala is to be constructed, the next big thing will be a big hotel on the summit. An up-to-date hotel on Haleakala would pay from the day it is opened, and tourists from all over the United States and Europe would flock to the hostelry.

1937 - Three birds rarely seen in the territory were observed at Kanaha Pond, Kahului, on Wednesday morning. They have been positively identified as white-faced glossy ibis, a marsh bird frequently seen in Southern California.

1962 - Corporation papers for the merger of Baldwin Packers, Limited, and Maui Pineapple Company, Limited, into Haleakala Pineapple Company were filed with the office of the Treasurer of the State of Hawaii. Colin Cameron, Maui Pine vice-president, said the merger is effective as of Oct. 31.

1987 - Mayor Hannibal Tavares has announced his first slate of nominations to the newly created County Commission on Culture and the Arts. The nine nominees are Rita Moon, Cyril Chung, Sue Lamb, Eloise Richards, Don Sheridan, David Harder, Helen Scantlin, Linda Takita and Rita Whitford.

2002 - The Maui Chinese Cultural Society is inviting the Chinese community to attend the celebration of the birthday of Sun Yat Sen at 10 a.m. Monday at the park named for him on the Ulupalakua side of Keokea. Organizers ask that anyone attending bring a foot-long strand of flowers to be connected on site and placed at the foot of the statue.
