Rail project reserves $5 million for art
HONOLULU - The Honolulu rail system's 21 train stations are going to get a makeover.
The Honolulu rail project is reserving about $5 million to buy artwork to dress up the system's 21 train stations.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser says the city expects to invite artists from across the nation to compete for a chance to win commissions. It also may offer the public an opportunity to participate in the artist selection.
The nearly $2 million from the local Art in Transit program is expected to cover the cost of contracts with about 10 artists. Lisa Yoshihara with the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation says the city wants the art to reflect Hawaii's multicultural landscape as well as the community in which the station resides.
