Holiday book sale will help Maui libraries
Maui Friends of the Library will have a holiday book sale from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in front of the Makawao Public Library.
There will be a selection of fiction, nonfiction and holiday books. All proceeds are used to purchase books, magazines and equipment and to sponsor programs for Maui's public libraries. For more information, visit www.mauifriendsofthelibrary.org.

'First Staters' invited to Saturday celebration
The annual Delaware Day Celebration will begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Fleetwood's on Front Street in Lahaina.
"First Staters," who have lived or worked in Delaware, are invited to attend and are asked to wear a Delaware article of clothing.

Karnival will feature live entertainment
The Kekaulike Winter Karnival will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at King Kekaulike High School. Festivities will feature live KKHS entertainment (acrobat act, dancers, singers, violinist, and the Kalama School "Poly Ukulele" performers), games for all ages, book fair for all ages, holiday craft making, pony rides, slide, jumping castle, face painting, animal balloon making, food and drink, baked goods and photos with Santa and his elves.
There will be a winter dance (for high school students only) with DJC from Next Level Entertainment from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Kekaulike High School cafetorium (all high school students must bring their student ID). The presale dance tickets cost $5, and cost at the door will be $8.

'Is Jesus the One?' topic of symposium
The Philosophy Club of Seabury Hall will host a "First Wednesday" symposium at 7 p.m. Wednesday titled "Is Jesus the One?"
The interfaith gathering will take place in the new Performing Arts Center at the school in Makawao. Panel members for a discussion on "Messianic Hope" will include philosophers, theologians and practitioners of some of the world's major religions. The event is free and open to the public.

Maui resident to perform songs on the koto
Maui resident Mika Inaba will perform Christmas and Japanese songs on the koto at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Kihei Public Library.
The koto is a traditional Japanese stringed instrument. Inaba will play "Hiyaku (Leap)," "Taka (Hawk)," "Silent Night," and "Jingle Bells." She will be accompanied by Koko Wolbe, a teacher from Miyagi, Japan.
The program is appropriate for all ages. Admission is free.

Kahului Jodo Mission plans rummage sale
Kahului Jodo Mission will have a rummage and food sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the church hall at 325 Laau St. near the Maui High School football field side of Kahului School.
Food items for sale include baked goods, pickled vegetables, nishime, chicken hekka, kalua pig and sushi rice
The American Youth Soccer Organization BOYZ U14 and U10 soccer team will also have its shoyu chicken plate fundraiser pick-up during this time. The teams will be participating in the Kirk Banks Soccer Tournament on Oahu. People interested in purchasing tickets may call coach Jessie Hozaki at 214-7361.

Boys and Girls Clubs plan youth dance
A social dance for youths ages 9 to 17 will take place Friday at the Eddie Tam Gym in Makawao and will feature music by Chilltown Productions.
Registration for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui event begins at 6 p.m., and a $4 donation will be accepted at the door from club members. Nonmembers are asked to donate $8. The dance runs from 7 to 10 p.m.

Moniz to speak at Rotary breakfast
Stacey Moniz, executive director of Women Helping Women, will speak at the breakfast meeting of the Rotary Club of Kihei Sunrise at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Women Helping Women operates Hale Lokomaika'i, an emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence. The mission of Women Helping Women is to end domestic violence through advocacy, education and prevention and to offer safety, support and empowerment to women and children and victims of domestic violence. Moniz has worked as a victims' advocate, support group facilitator and community outreach specialist. She has also assisted the Maui Police Department as a member of the Domestic Violence Response Team and has educated 2nd Circuit Court juries about the dynamics of domestic violence.
The cost of the breakfast is $22. The public is invited to the meeting at the Five Palms Restaurant at the Mana Kai Maui Resort in Kihei.

Habitat for Humanity to address Rotary
Marty McMahon, ecycling coordinator, and Polly MacRoberts, ReStore manager, of Habitat for Humanity will speak at the noon Thursday meeting of the Rotary Club of Maui at the Class Act Restaurant at the University of Hawaii Maui College.
McMahon will discuss electronics recycling, and MacRoberts will discuss Habitat for Humanity ReStore operations. Cost is $20. The public is welcome.

Maui harpists to appear in concert
Maui harpists will perform at the Festival of Harps 2012 in the McCoy Studio Theater of the Maui Arts & Cultural Center Friday and Saturday.
This year's program will feature harpists Ginny Morgan, Alfred Wolf, Bobbie Jo Curley, Irene Ryding, Elaine Olson and Geoffrey Naylor.
Los Angeles-based voice artist Joe Spangler will narrate the concert along with Maui actress Jennifer Rose. Also featured will be Jackson Maberry, a graduate of St. Anthony High School who recently returned to Maui after graduating with a master's degree in music from Cambridge University in England.
The festival will be a benefit for Hospice Maui, in recognition of use of harps in hospice work. Proceeds will go to their new building project.
Ticket prices are $17 for adults and $12 for students and seniors. Tickets can be purchased at the MACC box office or by calling 242-SHOW (7469) or online at MauiArts.org.

The Italian American Club of Maui will host its annual Christmas Celebration from 1 to 4 p.m. on Dec. 9 at the Class Act Restaurant at the University of Hawaii Maui College. Safe driving class planned for Dec. 11
An AARP Driver Safety Class will be offered from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Dec. 11 at the West Maui Senior Center.
The class is open to everyone, although it is designed for drivers 50 years old and older. The emphasis is to become more aware of common age-related physical changes, how they affect one's driving ability and how to compensate. The instructor is Kelly Stanley.
A $14 fee will be collected at the beginning of class. AARP members receive a $2 discount. Some insurance carriers offer discounts to those who complete the class.
