Scoping meeting on watersheds Tuesday

A public scoping meeting on the West Maui Ridge to Reef Initiative will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Lahaina Civic Center.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are seeking input from government agencies as well as residents and organizations on a study to expand the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-funded Wahikuli-Honokowai watershed to the Honokahua, Kahana and Honolua watershed areas.

The initiative is to implement a comprehensive management strategy to address impacts to coral reefs across multiple watersheds, the corps said previously.

Firefighters battle sugar cane blaze

Fire burned an acre and a half of sugar cane Friday afternoon near the Paia Youth & Cultural Center, Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga said.

The cause of the fire reported at 5:48 p.m. was undetermined, and no injuries were reported, he said.

Paia and Kahului firefighters responded to the "unscheduled cane fire" and brought the blaze under control at 6:27 p.m., using water from the Kahului Fire Station's tanker, hand tools and an existing fire break, Mainaga said.

A damage estimate was not immediately available.
