Surfers to showcase talents

Leslie Kuloloio conducts a Hawaiian blessing while circled by many of the greatest big-wave surfers in the world Friday in Peahi during opening ceremonies for the Red Bull Jaws Paddle at Peahi surf contest. The waiting period for the contest started Friday and runs through March 15. Kuloloio explained that the spot is called Ke Kai ‘o Waitakulu, which means
“The Teary Eye.” Also taking part in the blessing were kumu Pulama Collier and her students from Ke Kula Kaiapuni ‘o Kekaulike no Maui Hawaiian Language Immersion Program.
