Ceremony marks start of inaugural Peahi contest

FIRST PHOTO: Professional surfer Ian Walsh of Haiku is presented a kihei from Pulama Collier, a Hawaiian Language Immersion Program instructor, during Friday's opening ceremony for the Red Bull Jaws Paddle at Peahi. The inaugural contest will take place when waves reach 30-50 feet, with a holding period that runs through March 15.

SECOND PHOTO: Kelly Slater, an 11-time Association of Surfing Professionals world champion, takes part in the event.

THIRD PHOTO: Students from Ke Kula Kaiapuni o Kekaulike no Maui Hawaiian Language Immersion Program perform the chant "Ku mai, Ka halu hui mai," a call for big waves.
