I'm surprised the Old Wailuku Post Office is going to be demolished (The Maui News, Dec. 2).
I'd figure the building would've been a good addition to the Wailuku Civic Center Historic District, which has four buildings that represent three distinct time periods.
The Old Courthouse represents the 1900s, Kalana Pakui/Old Police Station and the Wailuku Public Library represent the 1920s, and the Territorial Building represents the 1930s. No buildings in the general area represent the 1910s or the 1940s. And the old post office would at least give a sense of 1950s architecture and style in contrast to its neighbors.
But given the condition of the place as reported, I can see why demolition would be more feasible.
