The Maui News editorial on Dec. 2 is false. It stated that Joe Souki's bid to become speaker of the state House will be a good thing for Maui, and that Souki has done a good job representing all of Maui's citizens. This statement is absolutely false.
Souki voted against the civil unions bill and believes gays and lesbians do not deserve equal rights. Souki will most likely do his best to keep a marriage equality bill off the floor for a vote. He does not represent the Maui LGBT community. We need Calvin Say to remain the speaker.
