1912 - At the meeting of the Maui Chamber of Commerce, a letter proposing a fine hotel at the 4,000-foot-level of Haleakala was read. Also proposed was a rest house at the summit of Haleakala.

1937 - Mrs. Edna Jenkins was appointed district magistrate for Makawao Monday, succeeding D.B. Murdoch, who is retiring after 10 years on the bench. Mrs. Jenkins is the territory's first woman magistrate.

1962 - The first teenage night club in the state of Hawaii was born last Saturday when Maui's own radio station KMVI opened the doors of Club 550. Dancing on the nightclub-size floor began at 8:00 and continued until 11:00.

1987 - About 100 kids showed up at the Wailuku Library to see and hear Santa Claus, who has been making the rounds of the public libraries in Maui County. As the reading room began to fill up with children, a child burst into the room exclaiming, "Santa's in the bathroom!"

2002 - State Highways Division equipment operator Howard Nakasone spread holiday cheer Friday morning while mowing the roadside of Kaahumanu Avenue in Kahului. Nakasone said he had such a good response last year when he wore his Christmas hat, he decide to break it out again.
