Escapees kicked open gate, attacked officer on Big Isle

The Maui News

HILO - Court documents say two inmates who escaped from a Big Island jail last week kicked open a gate and attacked an officer on their way out.

Hawaii News Now reports that Jarvis Higa is being been charged with escape, kidnapping and other offenses. He appeared in court Mon-day.

Higa escaped from Hawaii Community Correctional Center while awaiting trial for attempted murder. Fellow inmate Ryan Jeffries-Hamar is still at-large.

Court documents say Higa and Jeffries-Hamar kicked open a gate leading from the prison's law library to the parking lot.

They then grabbed a prison guard by the neck and forced him into an outdoor restroom.

Documents say Higa choked the officer while Jeffries-Hamar punched him.

Police say Jeffries-Hamar stole another facility employee's keys and both men escaped in her car.
