Electrical hookup and new water pipes are part of the improvements that were installed at Maalaea Small Boat Harbor in these photos taken last week. The entire project includes a new multiuse ferry terminal building and marginal wharf, a new wastewater treatment plant, concrete paved roadways and parking areas, multiple vessel sewage pump-out facilities, upgraded electrical, sewer and water utilities, and a new comfort station on the north side of the harbor, according to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. The existing asphalt paved roadways and parking areas will be replaced with concrete paving, which requires minimal maintenance and will last a lot longer than asphalt pavement. The electrical, sewer and water utilities were upgraded to comply with state and county requirements. In addition, the water system will be upgraded to provide fire protection for vessels and buildings throughout the harbor. The cost of the improvements is $15 million. The entire project is expected to be completed by the end of the month.
