Mochi making to be taught at meeting

December 12, 2012
The Maui News

The Japanese Cultural Society of Maui will hold its quarterly meeting at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 27 in the Wailuku Hongwanji social hall.

Participants will learn how to make mochi for ozoni, for decorative purposes (kazari mochi) and for dessert.

Traditional mochi pounding will be offered for those who wish to try. Ozoni and mochi dishes (fried, kinako, etc.), along with a light dinner, will be served.

President Brian Nagami will preside over a quarterly membership meeting, followed by a presentation on Japanese traditions observed during New Year and a "make your own" kadomatsu activity. The cost is $10 for mochi sampling and light dinner, and $10 for the kadomatsu and supplies.

The public is invited. The event is limited to the first 100 participants, and only 30 kadomatsu will be available for purchase.

Tickets for the dinner and kadomatsu are available for purchase at Credit Associates of Hawaii in Wailuku. The deadline for purchase is Dec. 19. Call Kay Fukumoto at 283-9999 for further information.
