In response to the question of why our electric bills are the highest in the nation (Letters, Dec. 6): Maui Electric Co. can get away with it.
For another simple explanation: This utility is owned by shareholders. It likes to make money on the backs and with the blessings of our government, which allows the rates to continue to climb on the consumers at the same time the utility builds barricades to prevent more people to seek alternate solutions (read solar).
I wrote about this in a Feb. 29 letter. Nobody contacted me to join forces and try to change this abuse.
About a month ago, I called the office of the council representative for West Maui to raise the same concerns. No response either.

It's almost criminal to see it is building solar and wind farms to lower the cost of producing at the same time it keeps raising the cost to the end user.
