WAILUKU - A 47-year-old homeless man was being held on $50,000 bail at the Wailuku Police Station on Tuesday after he allegedly threatened a man with a machete in the parking lot of Cary & Eddie's Hideaway restaurant in Kahului on Monday afternoon, police said.
Raul Gonzales was charged with first-degree robbery, police records show.
Lt. Jayson Rego of the Criminal Investigation Division said the incident occurred around 1:02 p.m. Monday as a man was getting into his car in the restaurant parking lot when a man approached him holding a machete.
The victim said the man told him: " 'Give me your wallet or I'm going to cut you,' " Rego said.
Rego added that the man, whom the victim identified as Gonzales and as a homeless man who frequents the beach area around the restaurant, continued to yell at him.
Then Gonzales allegedly knocked the victim to the ground and then ran away to the nearby beach area.
Gonzales was located by police fronting the Maui Seaside Hotel, Rego said.
The machete was found at the scene, and Gonzales had a sheath knife case on his waistband, Rego said.
