Maui police were looking Tuesday for suspects involved in the assault and kidnapping of a pizza delivery driver while he was working in a Waiehu neighborhood Monday night, police said.
The 41-year-old man lost consciousness during the assault and suffered a laceration to the back of his head, multiple face contusions and swelling, and a nasal fracture, said Lt. Jayson Rego of the Criminal Investigation Division. The man was kept at Maui Memorial Medical Center overnight for observation.
Police were called around 8:15 p.m. to Malaihi Road to respond to a report of a man with bloody facial injuries asking for help, Rego said. The man told police he had been delivering pizzas for Pizza Hut on Kaae Road in Waiehu when he was assaulted by several males and lost consciousness. When he woke up, he was on Malaihi Road, Rego said.
Apparently the victim was taken in his own car to Malaihi Road, then the car was taken back to the Kaae Road area where it was found, he said.
Police checked the Kaae Road area for suspects, and Rego said there had been a large gathering of males and females on the road but at a different location from where the pizza was delivered. The group had left before police arrived.
Police opened an investigation of second-degree robbery, second-degree assault, kidnapping and unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.
