Our kudos go out to Maui Humane Society for its new website.
Go to "What We Do," scroll down to "Field Operations," "A Citizens Guide to Pet Ownership" then see "Maui Humane Society Citizen's Guide to Animal Regulations in Maui County." This is a guide all animal guardians need to print and read to be a more responsible animal owner to your neighbors and community - Page 17, in particular, on being a good neighbor when it comes to an excessively barking dog or picking up feces.
We think this is a good handout to be given to all prospective tenants who have dogs and should be required to sign a form indicating they have received this manual and will comply with all regulations. This also goes for homeowners who have pets.
Regarding the leash law which so many say we do not have or that they do not have to abide by, read the the manual under Maui County Code Section 6.04.040. It is the law and you do. This is to protect not only one's pet from being hit or attacked, but possibly your dog from attacking another on a leash.
Do not leave a dog unattended if a door is open out that allows dogs to run out and bite and attack a leashed dog. Remember, the leashed dog is in the right and the dog not on a leash is illegal no matter the circumstance.
Most of all, respect your neighbors by being responsible to them.
