Honoring one’s heritage doesn’t equate to racism

December 23, 2012
The Maui News

In response to the Dec. 16 letter "Putting labels on Americans fuels racist mentality": Our African ancestors did not migrate here. We were kidnapped, beaten, chained, raped and slaughtered. Many drowning and thrown overboard by the thousands.

Upon our arrival, we were split apart and sold like cattle and forced to make our owners rich. We even built our Capitol building in Washington, D.C., with our labor.

So if someone chooses to honor our ancestors by adding African to our American heritage, and anybody else who thinks it's racist, get over it.

The letter writer even breaks his own definition of racism by calling the president a mulatto American. He's still your mulatto-American president.
